De compacte installatieautomaten Ex9B40J zijn geschikt voor residentiële en commerciële toepassingen. Met een breedte van 3/4 module (13,5 mm per pool in plaats van 18 mm bij standaard uitvoeringen) zijn ze bijzonder geschikt voor installaties met beperkte inbouwruimte. De interne opbouw is gelijk aan die van de standaard Ex9B-serie, waardoor de Ex9B40J volledig compatibel is met accessoires zoals uitschakelspoelen, onder- en overspanningsrelais, hulpcontacten en alarmcontacten. Per automaat kunnen maximaal drie hulp- of alarmcontacten en twee uitschakelmodules worden gemonteerd.
